Last weekend was the club’s 'UK Directors Day’, when we celebrate up and coming UK Directors with two films for the price of one. This year we were lucky because both directors had managed to get big stars – a very difficult feat in the modern film world.
I would tell you all about '45 Years', but Tom has decided to put this on at the Alhambra in November so I won't spoil it for you; go and see it, it is great and scored even higher with the club audience than 'Slow West'. Directed by Andrew Haigh, it features great performances from Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay.
A week before Kate and Geoff's 45th wedding anniversary party, Geoff receives news from the past: his ex-girlfriend died 50 years ago in a climbing accident and her body has just been discovered. This news upsets the balance of their marriage, both Kate and Geoff rethinking their relationship.
A story about love, what it means, what the past can do to it and how important living NOW is; the acting is superb, with Rampling's face showing so many emotions as doubt creeps over her and Courtenay bumbling along wonderfully as the bewildered old man. Definitely worth a trip to the Alhambra if you missed it on Sunday!
