A Good Woman is Hard to Find

Reviewed by Vaughan Ames

If you were one of the audience on Sunday night you will understand how hard it is to sum up this film. Whilst two thirds of the audience voted it as a four or five star movie, there were nine people who actually walked out (to whom I apologise if you were upset by the content). So what caused such a divide?

The film followed Sarah Collins; her husband has been murdered but the police are not interested; her son has refused to speak since; everywhere she goes people treat her as a thief or a prostitute – even her mother blames her for bad choices. When a low time crook steals some drugs from a big time drug dealer and insists on hiding them in her flat and then tries to rape her, she kills him in self-defence...but the drug dealer finds out about her anyway...

What put people off, I assume, was a very gruesome scene (which I won't describe!) but I for one enjoyed the 'film noir'-ish feeling and some great acting which, despite it not having the most coherent plot, really made you feel the constant threat to her and her children. And who couldn't like the ending..?
