Bereaved parents Sutherland and Christie attempt to escape the aftermath of their daughter's accidental drowning. In Venice - through Roeg's eyes a dank, sinister and labyrinthine place - the couple stumble through coincidences, premonitions and misunderstandings which cloud their suffering, culminating in one of the most chilling endings on film. Roeg's adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier short story is both an existential horror movie and a meditation on grief.
